Avoid Accidents With a Sheet Metal Brake

The title of this article could mean two things, I guess. First of all, it might refer to the well-known fact, that using the proper tool for the job is usually safer than kludging something together. Second, it might also refer to how you work safely with a sheet metal brake. Both are interesting points that deserve our attention.

First things first. If you even want to do a good job of bending sheet metal, you need a proper sheet metal bender. That much is obvious. But if you have ever tried to bend sheet metal without the right tools, you will know how much of a bother it is, and that it is potentially dangerous. If you put a piece of sheet metal in a vice and then try to bend it using hammers, cauls, pliers and whatnot, you may really injure yourself. Anytime you try to do something the wrong way, you often end up using way more physical power than you can do safely – just to bend that damn thing. I have seen people loose their balance doing this, and pushing with all their might as they were, they managed to cut their foreheads on the sharp metal grate, or hurt their hands, etc. If you can’t do something in a way that requires rather little physical strength, chances are you are doing it wrong and it could get dangerous.

On the other hand, using a real sheet metal brake is not without risk either, but here it is much smaller. The worst thing I can imagine happening is if you get your fingers stuck between the bed and the clamping bar, and to be honest – if that happens, you do not belong in a workshop in the first place. No – using the proper tools not only gets the job done faster and better – but also safer.
